The Center for AstroPhysical Surveys (CAPS) at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) is dedicated to the design, operation, data processing, and scientific analysis of astrophysical surveys. Members of CAPS include faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students from numerous units across the University of Illinois campus. CAPS facilitates collaboration, accelerates research, and provides cohesion for astrophysical survey science efforts, both across campus and with external partners. The center seeks to increase accessibility to advanced resources for astrophysical surveys, such as high-performance computing, data processing, software development, user-experience design, AI solutions, and consultation.
Overview

The Center for AstroPhysical Surveys (CAPS) is a research unit, housed within the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), dedicated to conducting, building, and analyzing data from astrophysical surveys. Members of CAPS include faculty, staff, and postdoctoral and graduate student fellows.
The center is involved in several surveys, including the Dark Energy Survey (DES), the Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s (VRO) Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), the South Pole Telescope (SPT), and the Cosmic Microwave Background Stage 4 (CMB-S4). In addition, CAPS is one of the lead partners of the SkAI Institute, which aims to accelerate Astro-AI research and help educate a diverse Astro-AI workforce.
The center is a collaborative effort between NCSA, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation, the Department of Astronomy, and the Department of Physics at Illinois.
